Storage Shelf
Most garage organization plans will include the installation of shelving. The most common type of shelving is the wire frame shelves. It is relatively inexpensive and comes in very long sections allowing you to have a shelf spanning an entire wall. Since these shelves do not come with directions, a few things are often overlooked if you are not careful.
The first thing is making sure they are level. If you don’t get this right you will have a result that is an eyesore and something you will not be proud of. If you have a laser level this step is much easier, but this is not a common tool found in most toolboxes so we will cover it the old fashion way.
1. Measure the distance from the floor to the height you desire the shelf to be and make a mark on the wall with a pencil. Make a mare for the far left and far right of the shelf.
2. Install two of the back clips, one for each end of the shelf.
3. Hang the shelf on the two clips installed in step 2. With a level, make sure that your shelf is level.
4. With the shelf still hanging on the wall, mark the places you will be hanging the existing clips.
The second thing you want to make sure of is that you hit studs whenever possible for the braces. Again, this is an easy task if you have a stud finder, but we are going to assume you don’t for this exercise.
1. With a hammer begin to gently peck the wall. You should hear the sound change as you move up and down the wall.
2. It should sound hallow when there is no stud behind the wall and once you have found one, the sound will change and you should be able to feel it with the hammer.
3. Once you think you found a stud, make a mark on the wall.
4. Typically studs are 16″ apart. To test this in your garage, measure 16″ from the mark you made either left or right and do the hammer test again.
5. Repeat this process until you feel like you have found the studs where you will install the shelf
6. Install the braces
Install the shelf, drag up a chair and gaze at the perfectly level shelf that will hold the weight of anything in your garage.
